I am using various visual motifs to illuminate recurrent themes in the Antonioni trilogy.  One idea that’s working is a simple chinese lantern and handheld camera that follows a couple walking.  I’ve chosen so far 2 tender scenes in which the characters seem to me to be released from the conventions of their daily lives.  In L’Eclisse it’s the scene when Vittoria and Piero wander in a plaza after the stock market crash and marvel that a man who has lost his fortune choses to make a flower instead of freaking out.  In La Notte it’s a nostalgic scene where Lidia wanders a field on the edge of the city and watches kids shooting rockets into the air.  I am still looking for that moment in L’Avventura.
